Editors Note: Housing is a very important component of the NDIS and this event will give people in Melbourne an opportunity to explore their housing options. There is no indication if the event will go beyond Melbourne and Sydney, whether it will be filmed in any way or not. A short documentary on the event, with interviews of the exhibitors and participants would be fantastic.
In fact, if anyone reading this is able to go to the event and either write up a report of the event, or take some video, conduct some interviews, I would be extremely grateful and could do several feature posts here on MDM, giving your work lots of exposure. Please get in touch with me if you can assist.
Like all Australians, participants in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) need access to affordable, appropriate and secure housing. The NDIS will offer many participants their first opportunity to plan to live more independently and to think about different housing options.
The lack of appropriate housing for people with very high needs has been recognised in the NDIS design and allowance is made for additional funding for specialist disability accommodation. More information is available on the Specialist disability accommodation page.
The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will support a sustainable specialist disability accommodation market that fosters choice and control, encourages innovation, and provides options for participants that, consistent with the NDIS goals, provide genuine choice and enhance inclusion.
The NDIA hosted the first Housing Showcase event in Sydney on 6 April 2016, you can view transcripts from the Sydney event on the NDIS Housing Showcase page.

The Melbourne Housing Showcase will build on the success of this event and will give people with disability, their families and carers an opportunity to hear about a number of different housing and support models that are currently available and growing across Australia.
The event will feature stories from people with disability about how they made their housing choices, and presentations from not for profits, parent cooperatives, housing organisations and support providers.
There will also be a small trade show with exhibitions from the presenters and other housing providers.
