The trial of a cashless welfare card in South Australia’s Far West begins today despite it continuing to generate division in the community.

Welfare recipients in the Ceduna region will be issued with a debit card which cannot be used for alcohol or gambling, with 80 per cent of benefits quarantined.

Veterans and aged pensioners are excluded.

Ceduna mayor Allan Suter said he was confident the program would go a long way to overcoming serious drug and alcohol problems, despite a scare campaign by some in the community.
